Large Chambers

First Ten Angstroms offers two similar large chambers which differ in their internal design. One is intended primarily for contact angle work and the other is intended for interfacial tension work. The photo shows the contact angle chamber mounted on an FTA200.

Both chambers are temperature stabilized by an external circulating bath. The bath itself is furnished by the user or can be purchased through FTA. With the proper bath and circulating fluids, the temperature can be controlled from -20C to 200C.

These are large chambers. The internal volume is nominally 200mm wide by 100mm deep by 60mm high. The top slides off for easy access to the whole internal space. A window in the front provides access for the microscope and there is a corresponding window in the rear for backlight illumination.

Contact Angle Chamber

The contact angle version is optimized for ambient temperature or heated work. It has a three axis circular sample stage: Z, rotation, and radial position. These adjustments are made manually from the outside by the knobs protruding from the bottom of the chamber. The photo shows this stage.

This chamber has the following features:

  • radial, theta, Z manually adjusted sample stage

  • removable top for easy access to interior

  • access hole in chamber top for dispense needle

  • passages in chamber walls for circulating fluid

  • RTD and readout for air temperature in chamber

  • port to flood interior with nitrogen or other benign gas

  • insulating cover to reduce heat loss

While intended for contact angle work of sessile drops sitting on substrates, this chamber can also be used for simple pendant drop liquid-vapor interfacial tension work.

Interfacial Tension Chamber

The interfacial tension version is optimized for liquid - liquid work. The internal volume may be filled with liquid. There is no internal sample stage, but there is ample space for the user to provide their own fixed stages.

This chamber has the following features:

  • chamber may be filled with liquid; O-ring sealed windows

  • removable top for easy access to interior

  • access hole in chamber top for dispense needle

  • access hole in chamber bottom for upside down dispense needle

  • passages in chamber walls for circulating fluid

  • RTD and readout for chamber body temperature

  • fill and drain ports for chamber liquid

  • insulating cover to reduce heat loss

  • nozzles to direct dry air or nitrogen on chamber windows

When the chamber is used significantly below ambient temperature, condensation will form on the windows. This can be prevented, or removed, by directing dry air or nitrogen at the windows. The chamber includes these nozzles.

Notice the chamber includes ports for the normal downward directed needle and also for upward directed needles through the bottom. This provides for bubble up interfacial tension experiments.

Order number for contact angle version: 20-19.
