How the process should work .. .

Depending on the browser you are using, the Acrobat Reader plugin may load automatically and display the desired document (Internet Explorer 3.0 or later), or you may be asked if you wish to download the document or the appropriate plugin to view the document (Netscape Navigator 3.0 or later).

If none of the above happens you must be using a browser which does not support this automatic process and you will have to download the Acrobat Reader if you wish. Then you will have it whenever you need it.These documents take about five minutes to download depending, of course, on the size of the document and the speed of your modem. 

The benefit is that they appear on your screen and can be printed on your printer as they appeared originally.
